Primary-source labelling
Government material is mapped from publisher wording to a controlled set of record types, including news release, media advisory, statement, readout, speech, backgrounder, notice, bulletin, itinerary, report, and transcript. When the source label is missing or cannot be mapped confidently, we use “Other update.” We link to the original publisher and do not present government text as independent reporting.
Related coverage
Related Coverage has two evidence tiers. “Verified related reporting” is independently published Canadian reporting with a clear connection to the release’s event or subject, supported by multiple signals such as distinctive people, places, organizations, actions, phrases, amounts, or subject terms within a plausible publication window. It does not need to discuss the exact government announcement. “Broader related coverage” may connect more generally through the subject, named entities, location, or surrounding events and is labelled as background. “Verified” describes the strength of the relationship to the release; it does not rate an article’s factual accuracy.
Automation and summaries
Matching, grouping, thumbnails, summaries, claim extraction, and other signals may be produced with automated systems. These outputs can be incomplete or wrong. When an official release does not supply a suitable image, Canada Newsroom may use an original editorial illustration of the subject matter. It is labelled on the release page, never presented as source photography, and does not affect ranking. The interface directs readers to original sources rather than treating generated text or imagery as a substitute for them.
Authorship and responsibility
Official announcements are attributed to the institution that published them. Canada Newsroom is identified as the organization responsible for indexing, verification, topic classification, source connection, and original analysis. Organization-level or automated work is not assigned a fictional personal byline. When individually authored reporting is introduced, it will carry a named byline linked to information about that contributor.
Selection and ranking
Top Stories is an automatically assembled edition considering public consequence, geographic scope, quantified scale, substantive change, verified independent reporting, recency, and geographic and institutional balance. It is not simply a list of the newest releases. Cards disclose why they were selected, image availability does not raise a release’s ranking, and the section may contain fewer stories when too few qualify. An owner-selected story is separately labelled “Editor’s selection.” Placements are not endorsements or factuality ratings.
Topic classification
Releases receive one confidence-backed primary topic and may receive up to two secondary topics from a controlled taxonomy. Broad individual words do not determine a topic alone. Low-confidence classifications are withheld from public topic collections and personalized recommendations until reviewed.
Corrections and conflicts
We correct material errors in our own labels, summaries, or data when they are identified. We do not silently rewrite the content of linked sources. Correction requests and potential conflicts can be sent to support@canadanewsroom.ca.
