Our approach
Canada Newsroom is the public operating name responsible for this policy. The site is designed to work without an account. We do not sell personal information or build advertising profiles. The newsroom index and related-coverage searches use public news-release and publication data.

Information processed automatically
When you visit, our hosting provider may process standard technical information such as your IP address, browser type, requested page, time of request, and security signals. This information is used to deliver the site, prevent abuse, diagnose failures, and maintain security. Server logs are retained according to the hosting provider’s settings and policies.
Information stored on your device
Device-only newsroom watches and the list used to detect new watchlist matches are stored in your browser’s local storage. They are not submitted to our database. You can remove this information using the site’s clear controls or your browser’s site-data settings.
The site does not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking cookies.
Reader accounts and subscriptions
If you create an account, Clerk processes identity and sign-in information such as your email address and authentication records. Saved stories, follows, recent reading, and briefing preferences are stored with your account so My Newsroom remains available when you return. Legacy collection or note records created before those tools were retired remain covered by the export and deletion controls described below. If you subscribe, Stripe processes payment details and provides us with customer, subscription, and billing-status identifiers. We do not receive or store your full payment-card number. Neon stores the identifiers, account email, reader choices, preview timestamps, and subscription status needed to provide these features.
You can export your reader data, request access, correction, deletion, or portability, clear recent reading, turn personalization off, or unsubscribe from email. Deletion removes reader data and feedback; narrowly necessary billing/security records may be retained or de-identified as described below.
First-party audience measurement
We count a small set of first-party events, such as page and story views, official-source opens, saves, follows, briefing use, Newsroom Intelligence opens, preview starts, and aggregate email sends or clicks. These counts help the owner understand the reader journey and maintain the service. Event records do not include advertising identifiers, cross-site profiles, account identifiers, saved titles, follow labels, legacy note or collection contents, or individual reader timelines.
Location
The Local News feature requests browser location only after you select “Use my location.” If you agree, rounded coordinates are sent directly from your browser to BigDataCloud to identify a province or territory. canadanewsroom.ca does not store those coordinates. You can instead select a province manually and can withdraw browser permission at any time.
Notifications and email briefings
Browser notifications are enabled only after you request them and approve the browser prompt. Optional daily or weekly email briefings require affirmative opt-in, are based on explicit follows, explain why each item appears, and include one-click unsubscribe controls. Resend processes delivery; aggregate delivery and link-click measurement may be used. We do not use invisible email open-tracking pixels. An unsubscribe remains effective unless you later make a fresh affirmative opt-in.
Service providers and international processing
We use Vercel (hosting), Clerk (accounts), Stripe (payment processing), Neon (reader data), Resend (optional email), Vercel Blob (approved media), OpenAI (limited-evidence framing analysis), Google Gemini with Google Search grounding, and public-coverage discovery services such as Exa, GDELT, NewsAPI, and BigDataCloud. These providers act as processors or independent service providers for their stated roles. Information they process may be handled outside Canada and subject to local law. For coverage discovery, Google receives an official release title, institution, date, short official summary, and search window; it does not receive publisher article bodies, reader saves, follows, or account data. Reader saves and follows, including any legacy note or collection records retained pending deletion, are not sent to coverage providers, Google Gemini, or OpenAI.
Retention
Reader data: Until deletion is requested or the account is deleted. Billing data: Only for the period required by applicable tax, accounting, fraud-prevention, and legal obligations. Security data: As reasonably necessary for security, abuse prevention, and incident investigation.
Access, correction, and questions
If you believe we hold personal information about you, you may ask about access or correction through the contact page or email support@canadanewsroom.ca. Because device preferences remain in your own browser, we cannot retrieve them for you. Privacy concerns may also be raised with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the service changes. The revision date at the top will identify the current version. Material changes will be stated clearly on this page.
